In this sense a study carried out in a large hospital (1,600 beds) in Israel with 4,868 workers has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. All workers were followed up after they received the second dose of the vaccine (Pfizer).
An analysis was made every 4 weeks determining the level of defenses (IgG antibodies) against the coronavirus. Peak antibody levels were reached between 4 and 30 days after the second dose of the vaccine.
Later, the levels were falling, observing a significant decrease 6 months after receiving the second dose. In addition, in people over 65 years of age, the decrease in defenses was greater than that of the rest of the participants. It was also found that men had a greater drop in antibody levels than women.
Duration of the vaccine over time
In summary, this work has shown that defenses against COVID-19 decrease significantly at 6 months after receiving the second dose of the vaccine, and this decrease is more important in people over 65 years of age. These data support the administration of a third dose of vaccine 6 months after the second dose.
