{"id":3620,"date":"2022-01-20T22:02:06","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T22:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fehv.org\/?p=3620"},"modified":"2022-01-20T22:02:08","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T22:02:08","slug":"duration-vaccine-against-covid-19-effective-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fehv.org\/en\/duration-vaccine-against-covid-19-effective-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Duration of the vaccine against COVID-19 and possible effective drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new study has been published in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a><\/strong> that confirms previous work on the duration of protection conferred by vaccines against COVID-19. This study included 7,106,982 people who had received the two doses of the vaccine (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fehv.org\/en\/vaccines-against-coronavirus-pfizer-moderna-and-astrazeneca\/\">from AstraZeneca or Pfizer<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They found that in those over 65 years of age, protection against infection decreased 20 weeks after receiving the second dose when compared to baseline protection (38% vs 62%). Similar results were found in the group aged 16 to 64 years, but the decrease in protection was less (44.3% vs 64.8%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also at 20 weeks, vaccine effectiveness decreased (although less pronounced) against the probability of death from COVID-19, <strong>both in those over 65 years of age (82% vs. 94% at baseline) and in persons 16 to 64 years of age (84% vs. 95%)<\/strong>. In general, a trend of more favourable results is observed with the Pfizer vaccine than with the AstraZeneca vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"mt-5 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is a continuous reinforcement necessary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking these data into account, it seems reasonable to administer a third dose of vaccine 20 weeks after receiving the second one. However, we believe that the way forward should <strong>not be to periodically vaccinate the entire population indefinitely<\/strong>, as this could weaken people&#8217;s defense system. It seems much more reasonable to develop antiviral drugs that are capable of blocking old and new variants of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"mt-5 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tests with antivirals against COVID-19<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sense, the <strong>Journal of Molecular Structure<\/strong> has compared the genetic structure of the coronavirus with that of the hepatitis C virus, finding many similarities between both viruses. Since there are powerful FDA-approved antiviral drugs against hepatitis C, it has been studied using a bioinformatic model their efficacy in <strong>blocking a coronavirus enzyme<\/strong> (the main Protease) that is essential for its replication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been proven that at least 6 of the antivirals used against hepatitis C, effectively block the coronavirus enzyme and therefore can be useful treatments to cure COVID-19. Given that these drugs are already being used in people with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fehv.org\/en\/diseases\/hepatitis-c\/\">hepatitis C<\/a><\/strong>, we believe that trials against COVID-19 should be started as soon as possible to verify their efficacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We analyze the latest studies carried out regarding post-vacial protection against coronavirus and the appearance of new medications.","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1541,622,621],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3620","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-covid-19-en","category-hepatitis-c-en","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.6 (Yoast SEO v27.6) -
