The World Health Organization estimates that 3% of the world population, approximately 170 million people, suffer from <strong>hepatitis C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-66cc3418 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"66cc3418\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5e29edff\" data-id=\"5e29edff\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-656d67a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"656d67a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Since a patient begins to suffer from chronic hepatitis C there are several stages of evolution from less to more serious. The degree of severity is determined by the presence of <strong>fibrosis in the liver<\/strong>, there being five phases: F0 (there is no liver fibrosis), F1 (there is portal fibrosis without bridges), F2 (portal fibrosis with some bridges), F3 (portal fibrosis with many bridges, without cirrhosis) and F4 (liver cirrhosis). The majority of <strong>hepatitis C patients<\/strong> are in stages F0-F2 (77%), with F3 being 11% and F4 being 9.6%. The NS3 and NS5 proteins are essential for the replication of HCV and therefore are therapeutic targets. There are 6 main types of VCH (called genotypes from 1 to 6, each with several subtypes) that have a different global distribution. Thus, genotypes 1 (subtypes 1b and 1a) and 3 (subtype 3a) predominate in Spain (and Europe), although there are also cases by genotypes 2 and 4 of VCH.<\/p>\n<p>Genotype 5 is found in sub-Saharan Africa and genotype 6 in Asia. Hepatitis C is sometimes associated with infection with <strong>hepatitis B virus<\/strong>, which worsens the prognosis. Each year 3 to 4 million people worldwide are infected and around 350,000 die. The <strong>probability of transmission of hepatitis C<\/strong> by injection with a contaminated syringe is 1.5-4%. <strong>There is no preventive vaccine<\/strong> so in case of exposure to HCV should be taken precautionary measures.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that a <strong>patient with hepatitis C<\/strong> can perform a <strong>normal family, social and work activity<\/strong>, without taking any precautions to avoid the transmission of the disease. The classic treatment of hepatitis C involves the administration of pegylated interferon alfa (PegIFN) and ribavirin, but due to its limited efficacy (50% response) and its toxicity (flu syndrome, joint pain, etc.) it is no longer used .<\/p>\n<p>Currently there are several new drugs available that have a direct antiviral effect against hepatitis C. Sofosbuvir (Sovaldi @), Simeprevir (Olysio @), Daclatasvir (Daklinza @), Sofosbuvir + Ledipasvir (Harvoni @), Ombitasvir + Paritaprevir + Dasabuvir + Ritonavir (Viekira pak @), etc. These new drugs have great advantages compared to the old ones:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>tolerance is excellent and only 20% of patients notice mild symptoms (headache, tiredness)<\/li>\n<li>Its effectiveness is much higher than that of previous drugs: they prevent inflammation and destruction and eliminate the virus in about 90% of cases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6d96d2e5 elementor-section-stretched elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6d96d2e5\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;stretch_section&quot;:&quot;section-stretched&quot;,&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3def3546\" data-id=\"3def3546\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49e8e378 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49e8e378\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The duration of treatment varies between 12 and 24 weeks depending on the characteristics of <strong>hepatitis C<\/strong> at the beginning of treatment: patients with cirrhosis, high viral load (concentration of HCV RNA) or who have not responded to previous treatments need to receive the drugs during a longer period.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3a7059c8\" data-id=\"3a7059c8\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a48156f elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1a48156f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fehv.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/inyeccion_hepatitis_c.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4993fac elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4993fac\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-919fee5\" data-id=\"919fee5\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8327ba3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8327ba3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Currently, new studies are underway to try to reduce the duration of treatment to 6-8 weeks in patients with certain characteristics: low viral load, absence of cirrhosis, etc. There are several combinations of these drugs that can be used: Sofosbuvir + Simeprevir, Sofosbuvir + Daclatasvir, Sofosbuvir + Ledipasvir, etc. Patients with HCV genotypes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 respond well to these treatments but those with genotype 3 respond worse.
